The reason for this disparity? “Externalities,” economist-speak for the collateral damage caused by factory farming: public health risks overlooked or ignored, worker mistreatment, severe environmental damage, animal cruelty, unresponsive and irresponsible government, and disproportionate industry influence on public policy.
